General Summary
The Fleet Operations Manager is tasked with overseeing the operational aspects of transportation on a daily basis. Responsibilities consist of supervision of close to 40 drivers, ensuring timely deliveries to designated locations, maximizing tractor capacity utilization, managing inbound reverse logistics, and upholding driver safety and regulatory compliance.
Duties & Responsibilities
- 80% A significant aspect of the role is centered on driver safety, FMCSA regulations, and DOT compliance. You will be tasked with ensuring delivery routes are completed on time, maximizing the efficiency of tractor utilization, and maintaining the accuracy of driver pay.
- 20% Developing robust relationships with drivers by understanding their work-life balance, fulfilling their expectations, and conducting quarterly face-to-face meetings is a key element, representing 20% of the role. Overseeing driver training, improving driver retention rates, reducing idle time, optimizing fuel efficiency (miles per gallon), managing load dispatch tasks, overseeing equipment usage, and ensuring efficient utilization of driver management systems are crucial responsibilities. Promoting a safety-oriented culture through the evaluation of drivers' safety performance is essential.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Confirmed expertise in leading dedicated transportation operations and a thorough understanding of FMCSA/DOT regulations
- Familiarity with the CSA program is necessary for compliance and safety purposes
- Well-developed communication skills (both written and verbal), the ability to actively listen, interpersonal issue resolution, and creative problem-solving capabilities
- Thorough focus on specifics, solid preparation, and adept organizational abilities
- Skill in interpreting driver schedules, monitoring hours of operation, and comprehending the nuances of dedicated fleet functions
- Skilled in utilizing specialized software that improves transportation operations by optimizing routing strategies, managing bids, coordinating schedules, and tracking the status of shipments
- Demonstrating competence in high-pressure situations
- Capable in utilizing MS Office applications
- Preparedness to engage in travel of up to 10%
Work Experience & Education
- Candidates are encouraged to possess a Bachelor's degree in Business or Logistics, or have similar experience of 1-3 years in transportation operations within retail, manufacturing, carrier, or logistics organizations
- Experience managing a team of 40 drivers for a minimum of 1 to 3 years is a plus
- Candidates with on-site driver management experience, specifically within the 1 to 3-year range, are preferred
- One year of exposure to Driver Dispatch Management Systems, including but not limited to McLeod, TMW, Telogis, Dispatch Tracks, and AS400, is a prerequisite
